Today I hung my first two canvases of my oil painting series. This was incredibly important as I needed to see how the images and colours worked against a blank, white, studio wall.
The most successful thing about hanging these canvases were the reactions that I got from the other people in the studios. My aim for this project was to create images which questioned people’s reactions to certain subjects and stimuli placed before them. It was important for me as each member had an individual reaction to these works! Yet all were in a positive way, which was fantastic. I want my art to act in a peaceful way, I do not want to scream opinions and histories in my viewers’s face but I want people to engage with the Gestalt idea. An idea which allows us to explore knowledge, ideas, memories to gain a fuller picture from the limited visual stimulus placed before them. From studying the Gestalt idea, it is estimated that each person would have a different reaction because of the above… And so they did!
Today I have emailed an Art Therapist at the Royal Marsden Hospital, London. I hope that I may be able to spend some time in their Art Therapy department where I can learn more about how Art Therapy works. I understand that therapy is a private, personal session, I do not expect to be present in any of these, it would just be extremely interesting to spend some time there to get a feel for the career. I am at that point in my degree where I need to be gaining experience in which I can build up to help me to decide on future plans.
I am certain that in some point in my life I would like to engage in a career which helps people through Art, either Art Therapy or Art Teaching. I need to analyse at what point, time and through what path I can attain these aims.
It is very difficult to know which career route you want to take in the world of Design. I am particularly interested, at the minute, with working around people. I am currently looking for placements or work experience which would allow me to get a feel for this area of work.
I have always worked around people, being brought up in a social environment and always working in a catering setting has enabled me to gain personable characteristics, expertise and experience. At university, I have studied modules which work around people’s needs. Marketing allowed us to analyse the markets’ needs, whilst the counselling elective allowed me to to delve deeper into counselling methods which are often practiced within the teaching profession.
Therapy and teaching are two aspects which I am currently particularly interested in. I have recently applied for experience at the Stamford Arts Centre, close to where I live. This will allow me to gain a wealth of experience; the centre deals with school children, the older generation and the disabled, which will build my skills with people, it also deals with aspects surrounding the gallery, this will help determine if I would want to work in a gallery environment and the centre also runs events, which need to be marketed, which allows for another sector to be explored. I hope that the centre offer me some work experience that would be extremely beneficial to me.
